Complaints about WPRF increase?

Considering what we get here in the village and the fact that over the last five years increases were very low, a ten dollar raise should expected.  A lot of associations have been wheeling and dealing under the table by not increasing the HOA fees while expenses increase. What does that do for the unit owner? Of course they don't get an increase but the money has to come from somewhere. So where? If you have any sense, it is most likely coming out of the money your association puts into the reserve funds for your roof.
While the money going in gets less and less, should something catastrophic happen such as a hurricane, a tornado, a fire or even god forbid, a terrorist attack, you may not be prepared for it and will lose your home and everything in it.
A ten dollar increase is a lot, but don't expect everything to be cheaper either.
Everything is getting more expensive, including buying and renting in the village.

Sidewalks or street, life or death?

Before someone get killed or injured, Let everyone know, sidewalks are for walking and even riding bicycles, STREETS are FOR MOTOR VEHICLES!!!!
Lately, too many people are walking in the street with their backs to oncoming traffic and dressed in dark clothing.
Does someone need to die before anyone says anything about this?
This is not just a resident problem, it is caretakers and visitors also. three or four times, I have seen people walking along the street talking on their cellphones while having their back to traffic.
IF YOU SEE THIS HAPPENING, BLOW YOUR HORN AT THEM, maybe then they'll get the hint.

  1. Hi all,

I would suggest that horn blowing is not the best approach.
We must all be considerate and careful for each other.

    1. Walking in the street at night is being considerate? Will you be saying that when someone gets hit? I believe if that unfortunate situation occurs, the Village will get sued by the driver and the intellectually deficient person or their family (if they do not survive). Then and only then will something be done. It will be Operation CYA all over again, as it has become with the fishing situation. It will be too late and someone in the village, or their family will move out to the beach at the expense of the rest of the villagers.

    2. Post signs that say "Warning Walking on Roads is Done at Your Own Risk." That will cover the village, and maybe the driver a bit.
      Delete
    3. We don't need signs saying the obvious. Everyone knows that you run the risk of getting hit if you walk on the road. These people know enough not to walk on the road outside the village. Just honk at them and don't move over the line into oncoming traffic. They will move.
    4. The signs are for the litigious residents. Can't sue if it is conspicuously posted.

  2. Bob is mentioning something that has bugged me for some time now. People walking in the street--on both sides of the road--seemingly without regard to traffic. Don't know what is going on with them--mental confusion, don't give a damn, whatever. But it is a hazard. In some defense of street walking, we do not have a decent sidewalk system in the village. Levy and other original developers here skimped on that amenity--and we all suffer with that now.

  3. What's the problem with these people? I walk around the village all the time and always stay on the walkway. Sounds like these walkers are just too lazy to cross to the other side that has a walkway. I drive and this does create a problem for us especially at night. It also is a problem during the day when you turn the corners and get a surprise seeing someone walking on the road. I agree with you Bob, this is definitely an accident waiting to happen. Signs should be posted.

  4. What are the signs going to say? "Walk on the sidewalks where there are sidewalks"? Or "Walk on sidewalk if there is one on either side of road"?

    1. Exactly, until funds can be raised to correct the sidewalk situation. I also think crosswalks on curves are a problem.

  5. Our Village is already known for having an overabundance of signs. Do you all really think we should add all these signs to the mix? We'd have to have these signs on virtually every road, wouldn't we? And not just one sign per road, but one every so many feet, I imagine. We would then be "Sign City" for sure! I can imagine Frank Cerabino's column in the Post when he got wind of this!

  7. As for getting in legal hot water and being sued for not having the signs, don't you think a judge would take into consideration what other developments do—that is, what is the norm among communities such as ours? I've made no study of this, but other communities must have some streets with no sidewalk or a sidewalk on only one side. I've never seen a raft of signs in these communities saying to walk on the sidewalk—especially a sign saying "if there is one on either side"!

I like the poems, but I will have to brush up on my Shakespeare to catch the import of your version, Peter. All I remember was that Brutus and Cassius were in league, and that "yon Cassius has a lean and hungry look."

I have seen the recent increase in people walking on the roads and agree, especially in the case of the perimeter road, it is dangerous. I would be for an educational campaign. Educational campaigns can work, but they usually require time to take hold. Notify residents prominently in the Reporter, on this blog, in e-mails sent to those who get them, at delegates meetings, with perhaps a sign in the UCO lobby, and on Channel 63. Taking these educational steps would surely also help mitigate the Village's responsibility.

  10. How about when the police come in to give speeding tickets, they should drive around and if they see anyone walking on the road give them a ticket for jay walking. I believe there is a jay walking law.
    Reply
  11. Grace, that would be hard to do. We have jay walkers all over the village. I guess this is something we have to live with like any other complex. I don't think Century Village can be sued for people jay walking. They choose to do this at their own risk and they should be accountable for their own lives. They know it is wrong. As far as the signs, I take it back. We have enough signs.

Yes there is More. The problem with people walking on the streets is bad enough, making them worst by having some really daredevil type that do it at night IN DARK CLOTHING just to make it a bit of a challenge. NowHow about slightly changing the subject from the walkers to the drivers, yes the drivers, many of whom should not be on the road anymore. The drivers that see the BIG RED sign with big letters on then in white, you know....STOP... Clear as can be, but still get ignored and have com close if not already caused some accidents here in the village. Those same people that see the STOP sign as a nuisance and just ignore them. Never mind that they have come close to hitting other cars or pedestrians, not paying attention because they haven't mastered the art of doing more than one thing at a time. And there are the ones that have retired from business, from most everything except the one thing they REALLY need to retire...their drivers' license. Reality check people....some of you need to turn the keys over to someone else and start taking the bus provided for you around the village. aIt one of the amenities we pay for, start using it.face it, if you have no clue when you need to stop, you need to give up the key. For the sake of yourself, for the sake of your family and for the sake of everyone living here in the village...GIVE IT UP. It's hard to face up to the fact that reflexes are slllooowwweerr, the mind take a little long to process things, you make even forget some things...no harm, non at at, unless you zip thru that stop sign and hit someone, whether he or she be another driver of pedestrian, or heaven forbid a visiting grandchild.

Something for the litigious to think about...

A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against, among other things, fire.

Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company.

In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires." The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued... and won.
In delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable fire, and was obligated to pay the claim.
Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his cigars lost in the "fires."
But after the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of arson!
With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine. This is a true story and was the First Place winner in the recent Criminal Lawyers Award Contest!

Answer to Olga's post

Yes you do need to say more. Quoting the sign at the gates of Auschwitz makes for good propaganda, but facts are facts. Fact: Adolph Hitler and his Party were socialist democrats (National Socialist German Workers Party)  NSDAP otherwise known as the NAZI party.
Trump and the RepublicanParty are not trying to take away the rights of it's citizens by banning guns... If you know your history, Adolph, Mao, Joseph and Vladimir banned gun ownership from their respective countries citizens and that in turn made it MUCH MUCH easier to have a dictatorship. Not much resistance from unarmed peasants, is there?

Scam Alert

*****SCAM ALERT!   SCAM ALERT!*****

We received a phone call from a recorded message claiming to be from the IRS. This is a computer generated voice, it says:

(the beginning was not recorded clearly)…"The IRS has decided to initiate proceedings against 'your name', so in the next 24 hours we will be marking a lien on your assets and your bank accounts for you inability to settle your debt with the IRS. A collection officer will visit with you soon to complete the paperworks, if you have any questions then call our tax default line 844-325-0371, I repeat, 844-325-0371. If you do not call immediately or we do not hear from your attorney, you will be sole responsible for all legal consequences, good bye”

We looked up the area code and apparently it is one that charges you and not the originator of the call. When it came to the part ‘your name’, it actually said “YOUR NAME”. THAT by itself should clue you in that it is a scam. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT Give ANYONE your banking information, credit card numbers, or social security numbers. Simply hang up and call PBSO and the IRS. The IRS has it's own POLICE AND WILL INVESTIGATE.

Is America the greatest?

https://youtu.be/ML3qYHWRIZk

Time to explore what's outside of the cave.

This is the only conclusion I could come up with that anyone in Century village would not want to join the 21st century... I imagine this is their thinking:

"Yep, it's time to start x-ploring outside the cave. Why, They's a whole new world out there!
They invented these little call boxes, kinda like our telephone but they ain't got no wires and there ain't no crank to get the operator to make your calls. They's call 'em cell phones,, and you can call anyone you want without yelling' too loud. Why they can hear ya clear across the county and you don't hafta even get yer voice all horse!
Why they even have these things that make noise kinda like the old victrola, but instead of the ol' 78's, they's are small silver disks and ain't got no grooves and make some really beautiful music and sometimes some awful noise they call rap or something. They got some of the same kinds disks that you put inside a box next to some new fangled TeeVee thing and they come out with them moving pictures. In color even! And them new fangled TeeVee's sure don't look like the TeeVee we had. Why they's more like going to the picture show at the old Bijou Theatre and almost as big!
They have a box on the desk with a TeeVee like thing and what looks like a typewriter but lays kinda flat and there ain't no place to roll up the paper into. They calls it a KEYboard. Tho' I ain't seen no keys, just a bunch of numbers and letters and some funny symbols and squiggly lines.
They even have that's smaller and fold in half and even one that you touch it with your finger and it does all kinds of things... They called that on a tablet... but I ain't seen no ten commandments on it so I ain't for sure how it could be's a tablet.
They said it work on something they's called a Why Fie. I don't know what a Why Fie is, but it must be something really small, cause I ain't never seen it. They's touch a bunch of letters on this here tablet and it come out with all sorts of information and stories and even some of them picture shows we saw on them new fangled TeeVees.
But I just don't know... All this new stuff out there and I ain't got no clue how to use them, so maybe I'll just go back in my cave and maybe they's just go away. "

Rising Fees-

First let me apologize for not answering comments quickly... I will try to check regularly...this is the answer to Gary Olman's comment about the last election:

Although it's been months since the election, there is still a historical standpoint that needs to be clarified. FDR was not term limited during his administration, it was done after and it was headed by the Republican Party, which later regretted it because IKE would have been re-elected easily for a third term. Instead we had JFK vs Nixon. We all know how that turned out.
Term limits for a president of a country may not be a bad thing, but Century Village is not a country, it's president is not a paid position, he doesn't get a lifetime pension and free medical for the rest of his life.
If the village doesn't like the job the president does, it only has to vote him or her out after their two year term (the POTUS gets 4).
Now a limit of 4 terms (8yrs) for a CV President would probably not be as objectionable to most. Something to consider...

Rising Fees in the Village
We in WPBCV should consider ourselves lucky to have the system we have here. Meetings are open and in some cases, televised, nothing is done in back rooms (as some accuse). You want to see backroom kind of thing, go look at the other CV's in this state. Their complaints are very visible on YouTube. They complain of not being allowed into meetings, not allowed to speak out and board meeting done in secret. All sounds illegal to me. They WISH they had our system. but alas, even that is not enough for some in WPVCV.

We have our share of professional "boat rockers" that will complain about anything, anyone and everything. With the price of everything going up each and every year, the increases to live here are minuscule by comparison.
With all the amenities that we get, we pay a small amount for a lot of service. When I hear someone complain over a raise in yearly amount of a dollar or two for things, it just irks me.
Okay, you don't want a raise in fees because Social Security or your pension isn't cutting it anymore? That's understandable. Consider for a moment cutting services to offset it.

We can always cut bus service to 1997 schedules and see how far that would go. (I have a copy of the 97 schedules if you want to see them). Services on the buses increase each year. More and more demands on where and when buses are wanted and many of these trips outside the village that should probably be paid for separately by the riders. There are many without vehicles and the bus services are not only a necessity, but godsend.

What if they brought back a fee for each time you took the bus, but, that wouldn't fly either. That would only further hurt the people that are complaining about any increase or have no vehicles or can't drive safely any longer.  Not everyone uses the buses, although everyone surely pays for it. Eventually everyone is going to need them. It is plain and simple, Mess with transportation and you are a villain.

Not everyone uses the pools, but everyone pays for it. Not everyone goes to the movies, but we even pay for that. We have some great shows during season at discounted prices (yes, those shows are greatly discounted and funded with the fees we pay each month). I don't think my mother has been to more than four live shows in over twenty years, but our WPRF fees pay for most of it (otherwise the shows would be in the $30-$40 range).

Your cable bill included in your Association fees. They increase every year by design. In the contract, they allow for increases of a certain percentage each and every year. Unless your association does some creative cuts elsewhere, you will most likely get an increase in your maintenance fees.

The proposed changes to cable (broadband) service may include WIFI service in each unit. Considering the technological changes in television, DVD and BluRay players being WIFI capable, this would make internet services such as Netflix, Vudu, Hulu, YouTube and Pandora easily accessible for next to nothing. The changes would also include more channels than we currently receive as well as some pay channels being included. What we have now is not keeping up with the times.

We have a great wood shop, dances, karaoke, shuffleboard, tennis, pickle ball, handball courts etc. All coming from that WPRF Fees and whatever amenities you get from your association are included in your HOA fees (many have patios with barbecue grills and tables, landscaping, cleaning )
When you look at the big picture, the amenities, the services, the cable service, you realize that everyone is paying for things they don't use, but may have to sometime in the near future.
The little things you now take for granted and expect, YOU pay for. These things are not all guaranteed nor are they a right. They could disappear very easily if you don't start paying attention and get involved.

Too many Associations have difficulties in just keeping board members. They don't want to get involved or people in the associations expect them to be miracle workers. Not being involved is what "the investors" want. It clears the way for them to take over and call the shots. Then they make the rules and force you out. Don't let it happen to you.

Broadband Thoughts

Been a while since I have posted anything, so here goes.
I recently watched the broadband meeting and I have to say, this company that made it's presentation made quite an impression. Sounds pretty good, but we all know there will be some die hards that will resist ANY increase regardless of the vast increase in services. EVERY home can have WIFI and before they go on about not needing WIFI, think about this: Just about EVERY new television, Every new DVD and Blue Ray players is WIFI capable, ALL smartphone use WIFI and when it is on WIFI they do not use up your data as well as improving the quality of your cell phone service.
The new TV's or "smart tv's" give all sorts of access to free and pay services, one of the most popular being NETFLIX, HULU or Youtube for video or Pandora for music.
There is also a question about having advertising to create revenue on our community channel (currently channel 62). This would be a great idea if used correctly. By correctly, I mean to say, have the advertisement revenue OFFSET the raises in service fees.

Here we go again.

Once or twice a year, or so it seems, we get the same people calling for term limits. It has failed before and hopefully fail again. Why can they not understand? Your vote IS the term limit.

Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush are good examples, but so is a the 5 time Florida Mayor that just lost to a twenty something year old that worked for the city. I can't honestly remember the name of the city other than it is nearby and starts with a D.
These term limit crazy people just don't get it. They think if you limit the persons experience then they will get better results. Not so.

(Climbing on my soapbox)
As for the national offices, putting term limits on politicians doesn't help the country until you eliminate their salary and medical benefits for life after serving only one or two terms. THAT is the travesty.
Have congress and the senate make those changes and save the taxpayers millions every year.
I think the only one that should receive a pension for political office without AT LEAST 20 years service is the office of the president of the United States and the Vice President.
Congress and the Senate should serve at least 20 years before being eligible for a pension JUST like our servicemen, police and firemen.

Okay, back to issue at hand for the village...
(stepping down to the lower soapbox)
Term limits for Century Village is inherent within the system already. If you feel the incumbent needs to be replaced, then just vote him or her out of office.

Conspiracy theorists UNITE!!!!

Some people are never satisfied. No matter what is done to appease certain malcontents, if the lose, they cry foul. Of course I refer to Olga's latest rant that the vote was rigged and of course she seems to be blaming Ed Black.
Time to face reality. You lost. Get over it! Make your bid for another run next year.
Geez, you actually gained a few votes since last year or the year before. At this rate you might actually get in in about ten or fifteen years.
Throwing out conspiracy theories after having the most efficient election process in the history of Century Village does nothing but show everyone that you are a really sore loser. Shameful.

changes?

I just found out that posting on this blog has been pretty difficult, so I made some changes to the settings and hopefully it will be a little easier.

EDWARDO comes out of the closet?

Has Edwardo finally come out of the closet? He says he is a "registered architect for over 50  years" and ""the major witness in the suit against Levy/WPRF".
He is none other than Edward Ross.
Her is my response to Edwardo's post:
So why don't you use your real name? Afraid ??? You are some kind of slime ball.
You are an ass... You have a sick friend? Sorry for your friend, surprised you have one, but sorry for him/her/it/whatever. Since you have in the past denied being Ed Ross, which is who everyone believes you are, then your admitting your committee membership pretty much proves who you are, so come on Eddy, you can come out of your closet, you can threaten me with your lawyer like you did before, but truth is, you STILL don't stay in Oxford like you claim. You sir are a LIAR and a COWARD.
Get your facts straight, I know that is asking a lot to task what little brain you have left, with all those little letters to go after your name, it must take you hours just to remember them. Senility must be a bitch. But just the same, glad to see you almost up to your old form. Once a jerk always a jerk.
\
I wrote a response to a posting and Edwardo came back with his vile and malicious posting. Sorry to the readers, but it was an attempt to get both sides to work together. If this is their response, NOT to post what I said, yet send their attack dog on me, then there truly is no chance of the malcontents getting much of anything in this or any sane administration. Makes me feel  like it will remain as before, with the one exception that they can't cry FIX at every turn.

Don't vote for...

I am glad I copied my response and posted it here since the the blog that claims to be "An open and Public blog" is obviously not so open nor public and publishes not "...those subjects that will be beneficial to the village". Nor the "good life in century village".
Gary, you started that blog and unfortunately you allowed a deranged person access to who can post on your blog. She has admitted to deleting my posts in the past and anytime she could get to them before you (Gary). Not very open, huh Gary?
Thank goodness that I also usually post my responses here as well, otherwise your blog seems very slanted. Even when you seem to try to be fair, your friend Olga is not. and Her argument that she will let me post when David lets her post on his blog. Childish response at best.
This is not the kind of person that should be in a position of authority within UCO.
She went into the UCO Reporter office and demand that her vile editorial be published and when it was refused because of the content being libel, she called Joy Vestal a Effin-C*#@(a derogatory term for the female anatomy) and threatened Joy. This is NOT the kind of person that should be in the position of responsibility in UCO.
Even further back, (when I worked at the Reporter) she was trying to submit an article supposedly written by her son concerning Pharmacists and their Techs and when I spoke, asking if she had any medical background, she denied having any. We went back and forth for a minute and her retort to me was YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED IN THE WAR! Sorry, but that was unforgivable. To tell a veteran of two wars that he should have died in it. Hanoi Jane has nothing on Olga. THIS PERSON DOES NOT DESERVE to be in the same room as ANY Veteran let alone represent anyone in UCO.
DO NOT VOTE FOR OLGA WOLKENSTEIN, Not even if she ran for Trash Inspector, (although THAT she may actually be qualified for).
You want to put your vote to good use? Vote for John Gragg. He is honest, hard working and devotes not only his time, but his own money to the betterment of the village.
Joy Vestal, dedicated and the most qualified person the UCO Reporter has ever had.
Ed Black is highly qualified to become a VP, but sad to say, he has many enemies in the village, the majority being with the malcontents. Although extremely competent, I fear he will not win.
Marcia Ziccardi previously a VP, did not get re-elected for good reason, she liked to put her nose in everyones business but her own. She has an opinion on everything, and how it should be done and has expertise in none. As Overseer on Transportation Committee, she went to only two or three meetings in two years. Once was because Lori Torres was away and she had no choice. Not a good choice.
John Gluszack, also not a great choice. oh yes, he got the gates closed at night which makes the money spent on barcodes a moot point, but there is also his health concerns. Problems that take him away from the village every summer for three or four months at a time.
Let's see now...Howard O'Brian or Ed Grossman...that's a no brainer... Has anyone checked Howard's signature to see if he puts those thee little letters after his name? I saw Ed's video and he claims to have worked on three newspapers in the past, the Smithtown Messenger, the Islip Messenger and the Ronkonkoma Messenger... and of course there is the CV Messenger...Is there a theme Here? All papers founded by our own messenger Ed? Sounds like Ed has something to complain about EVERYWHERE he goes.
John Hess or Eileen Pearlman, well, I know John Hess and trust him to have common sense and is a great organizer as the CERT team can attest to. Ms. Pearlman on the other hand, I have no idea who she is, or what she can or can not do.
Bobbi Levin or Marilyn Pomerantz? I barely know Bobbi, as I left The Reporter just as she was coming in, I know her to be reliable, but honestly, not much else. Marilyn on the other hand I know fairly well. She does work hard, but health concerns may become an issue, and of course, she does keep her friends informed of everything that goes on. Sorry, but trust may be an issue.
Now for the big one, President.
I have nothing against either David or Phyllis. I feel both have served the village with distinction and deserve to be recognized for it. I will support either one that wins. I do however slightly lean towards the incumbent with reservations.
David, I consider you a friend and it with that in mind that I say that there are times that you need to take a chill pill. Yes, the malcontents get under your skin at times, but take a step back and reflect on what you say before you say it...I know, coming from me, seems a little redundant  as I too need to follow my own advise, but I am working on it.  Either way  I wish you both luck this election.

More on the nonsense from Olga's accusations on the Reporter

Once again, Olga is trying to blame the people at the Reporter for her not getting her copy of the paper she hates but can't seem to put down.
Makes you wonder, should Phyliss Richland win the election, will we have to endure Olga's insanity in the paper every month?
Just a little background, here is my answer to her accusing the cam and before that Joy Vestal of not delivering her Reporter and below Olga's response, my further response to her. I print it here only because my responses are not always welcomed or printed, although if Gary sees it first, it usually does.
  1. So, now the CAM is telling someone not to deliver to Northampton R? First Joy, now Don. I am not the one making false accusations Gary. The Cam made a statement that some areas needed to get some more papers. Nothing was said of how the distribution is made, and I know for a fact that it is distributed by the maintenance companies and not the CAM. Like Joe Friday always says..."Just the facts".

  2. Bob, you say the maintenance companies are distributing the newspapers, if so, pray tell how does a store more than 2 miles away get the latest issue of the Reporter to use for wrapping paper while my building has yet to receive any papers?
It is the responsibility of the Reporter to see that every building gets papers BEFORE they are distributed to outside vendors.
    It's only fair.

While at the Reporter, we started getting the paper out to some of the store and restaraunts on the outside as a courtesy. Some requested it as they were advertising. The deliveries inside the village have been handled by the maintainence companies such as galleger and seacrest.  If you didn't get yours, ask them before you make false accusations and lies. As for you wrapping paper line, I seriously have doubts about that tall tale. Even so, at least it's better than the people that take five or six copies to selfishly collect coupons with considering the other residents. Have you checked with the residents of your building?
Just to be crystal clear and give you something else to bitch at, this is how it works:
The maintenance companies agree to to deliver the papers every month, and of course this takes time and money from them, so the Reporter provides advertising IN EXHANGE for delivering the paper. Why would a maintenance company risk not delivering only to your building and risk a scandal? Of course it is convenient for YOU to say that someone YOU oppose did it. Foolish nonsense. Par for the course.

Now we wait and see if it gets published. Note to Phyliss  ,
I would hope you know that even though I do not agree with the crowd you have chosen to affiliate with, I do hold YOU and your service to UCO in very high regard as I do with David.
I do not know if you will win this election or not, but if you do, and you have Olga have anything to do with the Reporter, I can almost guarantee, you won't get a second term.
